AWARDS
The Filmfare Awards rank among the most significant honors awarded to Hindi films in India.[182] The Indian magazine Filmfare launched these awards in 1954 (recognizing the top films of 1953), initially calling them the Clare Awards in tribute to the magazine's editor. They are designed after the voting-based merit system of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, allowing individuals to vote across different categories. A dual voting system was established in 1956.[183]
The National Film Awards were also created in 1954. Since 1973, the Indian government has funded these awards, which are administered by its Directorate of Film Festivals (DFF). The DFF presents Bollywood films, films from other regional industries, and independent/art films. The awards are conferred at an annual ceremony led by the president of India. Unlike the Filmfare Awards, which are selected by public votes and a committee of experts, the National Film Awards are determined by a government panel.[184]
Other notable award ceremonies for Hindi films in India include the Screen Awards (established in 1995) and the Stardust Awards, which started in 2003. The International Indian Film Academy Awards (launched in 2000) and the Zee Cine Awards, which began in 1998, take place in various countries each year.
